TRAVEL TIPS

Getting Here and Around

Air Travel

Lampang Airport, which handles domestic flights, is just west of downtown. Songthaews run to the city center for around B50. Bangkok Airways and Nok Air have several flights a day from Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport.

Bus Travel

Buses from Chiang Mai to Lampang, with a stop at the Elephant Conservation Center, leave every half hour from near the Tourism Authority of Thailand office on the road to Lamphun. Lampang's bus station is 2 km (1 mile) south of the city, just off the main highway to Bangkok. Faster VIP buses from Bangkok to Chiang Mai—operated by various companies—stop at Lampang; they leave Chiang Mai's Arcade Bus Station about every hour throughout the day. Fares from Chiang Mai range from about B40 to B150.

Songthaew and Carriage Travel

Within Lampang, songthaews are the cheapest way of getting around, though traveling via the city's horse-drawn carriages is much more thrilling. Carriages are at various city stands, with the largest contingent of carriages outside the Wiengthong Hotel.

Train Travel

All Bangkok–Chiang Mai trains stop at Lampang, where a samlor can take you the 3 km (2 miles) into town for about B40. By train, Lampang is about 2½ hours from Chiang Mai and 11 hours from Bangkok. First-class fares from Bangkok range from B1,300 for a sleeper to B600 or B800 for a day train.
